DESCRIPTION Since the Maltese Parliament recognised Maltese Sign Language (Lingwa tas-Sinjali Maltija, LSM) as an official language of Malta on 16th March 2016 it has become more and more visible on TV, digital media and in daily life. Learning the basics of LSM and aspects of Deaf Awareness will help students communicate with Deaf students and staff at University and with any other LSM users they meet.

This course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to communicate with Deaf people who use Maltese Sign Language. Students will learn about Deaf culture and the Deaf community, different communication methods and basic Maltese Sign Language for everyday situations.

The aim of this unit is to introduce students to Maltese Sign Language (Lingwa tas-Sinjali Maltija. LSM) the preferred language of Deaf people in the Maltese Islands.

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the unit the student will be able to:

• Identify different forms of communication used by Deaf and Hard of hearing people;
• Describe aspects of Deaf Culture;
• Describe technology and equipment used by Deaf and Hard of hearing people;
• Describe best practice when talking to hard of hearing people.

Skills
By the end of the unit the student will be able to:

• Introduce themselves in Maltese Sign Language;
• Describe their hobbies, likes and dislikes in LSM;
• Ask for clarification in LSM;
• Understand and answer simple questions in LSM.

Unit Material:

Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutors during the sessions.

Assessment:

In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with the unit. A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the semester.

Note: Degree plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of the many academic demands placed on students during their undergraduate years.
