| DESCRIPTION | This Unit will introduce various celebrated female composers and performers, with insights into the role of women in society and their capacity for artistic and professional development from the Middle Ages to present. The lectures will be divided into subsections, each dealing with a particular time period (Middle Ages and Renaissance, Baroque and Classical, Romantic and Impressionist, Twentieth Century and Present Day.) Within each category, the following areas will be considered: - The role of women in the social and political spheres of the time; - The possibilities of artistic expression and other artistic female protagonists of the period; - Specific composers/performers as representative or important examples of musical activities by women in the era. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the Unit the student will be able to: - Understand the role of women as composers and performers through history; - Recognise social, political and artistic trends that may have helped or hindered the development of women as artistic figures; - Understand the role of society in the development of female artistic individuals. 2. Skills: By the end of the Unit the student will be able to: - Identify key female historical and musical figures; - Compare the work of these key figures to the general output of their era; - Identify works of female composers and place them historically and musically in their proper context.
