DESCRIPTION The contemporary environment is a hybrid of global and local opportunities that give rise to new types of challenges. Private, public and social organisations need to develop innovative ways forward to identify leadership styles that open new possibilities for innovative activities instead of closing them.

The study-unit addresses the issues of creativity, innovation and leadership and the interrelations that may be traced through these topics, with particular emphasis on organisations that require innovative leadership in order to be successful in today’s scenario where change and the challenges it brings in its wake are faced on a regular basis.

Students will be expected to recognise the conditions that facilitate organisational creativity and innovation and to understand how these may be fostered and implemented, particularly through the appropriate contextual leadership attitudes and skills. They will be expected to identify the manner in which leaders in organisations are capable of enabling increased organisational innovation through strategic processes and policies.

This will enable students to achieve an understanding of the manner in which leaders may skilfully and strategically manage staff in their attempts to increase the innovation capability of an organisation and to explore and develop strategies to enable increased innovation.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this study unit, students will be able to:

- Explain the underlying meaning, the implications and the link between creativity, innovation and leadership;
- Describe the development of innovation through leadership;
- Explain the difference between leadership and management;
- Conduct personal and strategic assessments of organisational leadership and innovation;
- Recognise the qualities that are necessary for successful and inspirational leadership;
- Recognise the strategic process that organisations should implement to improve their capacity for innovation through leadership;
- Apply leadership skills to their personal, social and professional lives.
