Languages

Improve existing language skills or master the spoken and written expression of another language.  Improve your communication skills in relation to professional contexts or get the chance to learn a language you have always wanted to study. In all language units the communicative function of language will be the main focus of the activities. Each language programme deals both with writing and speaking abilities and is adapted according to the needs and competences of students attending the classes.

DGP0400: Ab Initio Lingua Latina

Semester 1

A Latin course for complete beginners. This course is ideal for students who desire an introduction to the Latin Language. By the end of the course students shall be able to form and translate simple Latin Sentences.

DGP0422: English for Professional Communication 1

Semester 1, Semester 2

This study unit is for students who wish to improve their skills in professional uses of English. A non-formal assessment exercise of students' proficiency in English usage generally will be made at the start of the unit. This will assist the tutor in tailoring the sessions to the specific needs of participants. Coverage of considerations involving improved style, usage, and tone will also be followed up with practice in the writing of formal correspondence, reports, and official documentation. The last sessions of the unit may also provide introductory practice in the delivery of formal presentations and in public speaking.

DGP0481: Chinese Language

Semester 1, Semester 2

This study-unit is geared for students who wish to learn some basic Chinese and who would like to know China better via the cultural awareness that they get through a study of the basics of the language. The student limit is that of twenty since this guarantees individual attention. This unit is meant for absolute beginners of the basics of the Chinese language and for those who want to obtain the relevant cultural awareness of Chinese society. Multi-media teaching materials will be used. Participants will learn the everyday Chinese language from native speakers, and they will be given informal assignments for communication.

DGP0484: Chinese Characters & Calligraphy

Semester 1, Semester 2

This study-unit is for students who wish to learn about and to experience the brush arts through calligraphy. The student limit is that of ten since only this can guarantee the necessary individual attention. This is a unit offered to absolute beginners of Chinese calligraphy and painting. Sessions include the introduction, appreciation and experience of brush calligraphy and painting. The Confucius Institute will provide the necessary didactic tools which students need to use in class.

DGP0492: Introduction to Modern Greek

Semester 2

This course aims to familiarise students with the Greek alphabet and elements of conversational Modern Greek as well as its basic grammar and to acquire knowledge of Greece from a cultural point of view. No prior knowledge of the language is required. Optional homework and in-class tests may be set by the lecturer but performance in either of this will have no bearing on certification. This study-unit is for students with no prior knowledge of Modern Greek.

DGP0493: Classical Greek

Semester 1

This is an opportunity to learn the basis of Classic Greek starting from the alphabet. By the end of the course, you will have learnt basic vocabulary, grammar, and reading simple texts of this language that has contributed so much culture and science. No prior knowledge of the language is required. Optional homework and in-class tests may be set by the lecturer but performance in either of this will have no bearing on certification.This study-unit is for students with no prior knowledge of Classical Greek.

DGP0494: Russian for Beginners

Semester 1

This study unit is for students who wish to start learning the Russian Language. The course consists of several parts: a short grammar introduction with explicit explanations; simple vocabulary; a phrase set; exercises to develop language usage competence; and a short socio-cultural introduction to the country that is thematically related to the lesson.

DGP0495: Sanskrit

Semester 2

This beginners’ course in Sanskrit will explore the measured, refined and ordered structure of the Sanskrit language and impart some understanding of the civilization within which the great wealth of Sanskrit literature was produced.  The student will become familiar with the Sanskrit Devanagari script, practise translating simple sentences into English from the original Sanskrit, as well as short texts from the literature.  Students will also practise reading and sounding of invocations and mantras.  By the end of the course, students should be able to read and write Sanskrit without difficulty

DGP0311 (ARB1014): Proficiency in Arabic 1 - Breakthrough

Semester 1

While taking this module you must take DGP0312: Proficiency in Arabic 2 - Breakthrough

This study-unit offers an introduction to basic grammatical elements of Modern Standard Arabic, starting with the Arabic Naskh script. Basic writing tasks and reading vocalized and unvocalized script, are performed. Writing skills are enhanced by learning vocabularies pertaining to the general and communication spheres of lexicon. Students are expected to dedicate at least one weekly hour of private study, during which they are assigned various language tasks, including consolidation of the newly learnt vocabularies.

DGP0312 (ARB1015): Proficiency in Arabic 2 - Breakthrough

Semester 1

While taking this module you must take DGP0311: Proficiency in Arabic 1 - Breakthrough   

This study-unit prepares students with no previous knowledge of Arabic to interact in Arabic-speaking environments in basic informal and formal Arabic, and to distinguish between various conversational registers. Students will learn how to fill in basic forms, write short and simple letters or postcards, take notes on familiar and predictable matters.

DGP0321 (FRE1500): Francais de base pour grands debutants - niveaux 1 et 2 - A1 (a suivre)

Semester 1

This study-unit is the introductory basis of the Certificate Course in French. It introduces complete beginners to the study of the language, exposing learners to level-appropriate oral conversations and written texts and training them to produce simple utterances and written sentences.

DGP0322 (FRE1501): Comprehension et expression orales et ecrites - niveaux 1 et 2 - A1 (fin)

Semester 2

This study-unit builds on the previous one and addresses all 4 linguistic skills: reading comprehension, oral comprehension, speaking and writing. Themes tackled include daily activities, lodging, travelling, city life, physical descriptions etc.

DGP0331 (GRM1031): German A1.1 CEFR

Semester 1

The study-units German A1.1 to German B1.2 offer language training from beginners’ German to upper intermediate level (following the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The study-units are designed as a series of continuing courses providing guidance for beginners with no previous knowledge of German steadily improving language skills. They are based on a communicative approach in class with a focus on applied German, starting from everyday-life situations to covering more broad topics as well as more specialised language use.

DGP0332 (GRM1032): German A1.2 CEFR

Semester 2

The study-unit will be a continuation of the course German A1.1. It is part of a series of courses leading from German beginners’ level to level B1 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

DGP0341 (ITL 1005) Proficiency in Italian 1 beginners level A1

Semester 1

This study-unit is an introduction to Italian language and Italian civilization. It is designed for students who have never learned Italian or whose knowledge is limited to just a few words. It combines basic grammar, vocabulary and communication skills studied in real life situations.

DGP0342 (ITL 1006): Proficiency in Italian 2 - elementary level A2

Semester 2

This pre-intermediate study-unit is dedicated to the study of the Italian language and Italian civilization. It is designed for students whose knowledge is limited to simple phrases and common Italian expressions. It combines basic grammar, vocabulary and communication skills studied in real life situations.

DGP0351 (SLA 1030): Spanish Language Ab Initio 1

Semester 1

For this unit no previous knowledge of the language is required. Using a hands-on active methodology in which the student communicates in Spanish from the very first day, students learn to develop and use simple everyday expressions designed to meet basic needs, like saying hello and goodbye, and present and talk about their immediate environment.

DGP0352 (SLA 1031): Spanish Language Ab Initio 2

Semester 2

This unit builds on Spanish Language 1, but can also be taken by students who already have a prior knowledge of Spanish. Through this unit students will be able to function socially simply but effectively, using simple expressions in common use and following basic formulas. Among other things, students will learn how to make and respond to greetings, invitations and suggestions, to ask for and accept apologies, to give advice and instructions, etc.

Tuition in Arabic, French, German, Italian and Spanish is offered by the Faculty of Arts as part of the Certificate in Language Proficiency Programme aimed to promote proficiency in foreign languages. Students opting to attend classes only (i.e. not take examinations and not be awarded the Certificate in Language Proficiency can be awarded a DegreePlus recognition). However, students are encouraged to register for the full Certificate through the Faculty of Arts.
