| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit seeks to provide students with a survey of Baroque art in Malta from its onset through Caravaggio’s realism to its triumphant peak with Mattia Preti’s works. The artists’ oeuvres will be discussed during lectures with special attention to their impact on local art and relation to the international scene. The skills for art appreciation will be discussed through various paintings pertaining to the Baroque style. A critical analysis will be carried out and students will learn to look out for symbolism, iconography and technical features in order to place the works within the Baroque style. The paintings discussed will be assigned within their Maltese context with focus on patronage, specifically that of the Knights of St John and on how they facilitated art and artists. Through the course, students will be able to identify Baroque art and artists in Malta as well as give a critical analysis of works of art. Unit Material: Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutors during the sessions. Assessment: In keeping with the spirit of the Degree Plus, there will be no formal assessment associated with this study-unit. A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the semester. |
