TITLE Introduction to Pilates

DEPARTMENT Degree Plus Programme

DESCRIPTION Learning Objectives:

• Increase core strength and general stability;
• Be able to safely, effectively execute Pilates matt repertory so that you can effectively monitor yourself in a matt class and self practice;
• Identify fundamental anatomy addressed by Pilates technique.

Description:

Pilates technique was developed by Joseph Pilates (1883-1967) over the long course of his engagement with the body. Class time will be devoted to a series of matt exercises. Requiring no equipment other than a foam matt, you will progressively learn a repertory of movement that you can practice at home, before sporting activities, or as part of your regular workout. Although focusing on the ‘core’ abdominal muscles, Pilates guides students toward greater stability, strength, flexibility, and safe movement.

Pilates is intended for all body types and most states of health. Your instructor will regularly provide alternatives if a particular movement or technique does not agree with you. More advanced options will also be provided for students already familiar with Pilates or wanting an intensified workout.

Assessment

In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with the unit. A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the semester.
