TITLE Principles of Design and Introduction to Adobe® Photoshop®

LEVEL 00 - Mod Pre-Tert, Foundation, Proficiency & DegreePlus

ECTS CREDITS Not Applicable

DEPARTMENT Degree Plus Programme

DESCRIPTION This DGP unit covers the four main principles of design: contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity and their application with the use of Adobe® Photoshop®. Typography and Illustrator text tools will also be covered as well as repairing and retouching images.

Learning Objectives:

- To introduce students to the principles of design using examples from Graphic Design;
- To train students in using basic functions of Adobe® Photoshop®;
- To help students populate a small portfolio of graphic design work.

Unit Material:

Students are encouraged to start following creative blogs (whether graphic design, photography or any other design related material) to inspire them and keep them updated with the current trends in the design field. Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutors during the sessions. There are no set texts for the unit, though tutors may recommend appropriate manuals to students who would like to take their work in this area further.

In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with the unit. Students will however be assigned practical tasks to carry out under the supervision of the unit tutor both alone and in teams. This will allow monitoring of their progress in their use of the software and in ways they tackle problem-solving. A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the semester.

Note: Degree plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of the many academic demands placed on students during their undergraduate years. Both the sessions and the assessment in "Principles of Design and Introduction to Adobe® Photoshop®" will be modulated in a way which will keep that consideration firmly in view.

ADDITIONAL NOTES This unit may not be offered if there is an insufficient number of applicants.
