DESCRIPTION Would you like to improve your public speaking skills? This study-unit will help you improve through some great advice, practicing short talks and communicating ideas through fun experiments.

While the study-unit focuses on science (from medicine to engineering) it is open to all backgrounds. The skills learnt in this study-unit will be used throughout your career. From giving talks to your colleagues to talking to family and friends, this short unit will help you communicate with academics and the public.

For the first half of the study-unit students will need to prepare short talks. The talks will be evaluated and feedback will be given in an informal manner meant to build the student’s confidence and skill set. These talks will be followed by subsequent lessons were the student will learn to perform short demos to different target audiences. At the end of this course a special one-off science podcast will be produced for Campus FM.

Learning Objectives:

• To introduce students to the theory behind general public speaking. These skills will be useful throughout the students career.
• To practice speaking to the public by giving short talks and receiving feedback to improve your skills.
• To learn how to speak to audiences of different backgrounds and communicate technical and scientific language to a non-technical audience.
• To produce a science radio show for Campus FM. The student will learn team working skills, radio production, research and communications skills.
• To provide an introduction to the Jarred Science Radio Show.

Assessment:
In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with the unit. Students will however be assigned a practical task to carry out under the supervision of the unit tutor. This will allow monitoring of their progress in their handling of English for Professional Purposes. A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the semester.

Note: Degree plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of the many academic demands placed on students during their undergraduate years. Both the sessions and the assessment in "English for Professional Purposes I" will be modulated in a way which will keep that consideration firmly in view.

Unit Material:
Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutors during the sessions. There are no set texts for the unit, though the tutors will recommend books for students who would like to take their work in this area further.

ADDITIONAL NOTES This unit may not be offered if there are an insufficient number of applicants.
