Climate Change & Sustainable Development

The following are the activities that will be organised by the Institute for Climate Change & Sustainable Development.

Walking
Sunday 26 October
As part of the Green Travel Plan promotion, the theme selected for this year’s Sunday session will be on ‘Walking’. Information on this theme will be held in the Marquee.

Mr Raphael Mizzi, GTP Coordinator UoM, and Ms Lara Gerada together with other representatives from the Health Promotion Unit within the Ministry for Health will be present on the ICCSD stand delivering information about walking benefits to visitors.

Mochica, the sponsor for the Walking event, will bring over 1-3 models of walking shoes, along with proper socks. They will also bring some basic models of stuff to go with walking, such as adequate bags and clothing. On the day Mochica will provide the service of fitting the insoles together with a stride test of a straight line, 9 paces long (nothing more than 4m). 

Developing Green Travel Plans
at 1300hrs in the KSU Common Room (duration: approx. 50 mins)
Developing Green Travel Plans - The Case of UoM and the benefits of using physical activity as a mode of transport
Mr Raphael Mizzi from the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development and Ms Lara Gerada from the Health Promotion Unit, at the Department of Health, will be discussing the Green Travel Plan at the University of Malta and the health benefits of using alternative modes of transport as a commuting method. 

Walk (starts at 1530hrs) 
Short Walk of approximately 30 minutes from the University of Malta Msida Campus to the Ta' Xbiex Parish Church and back. This walk will be led by Mr Raphael Mizzi, GTP Coordinator UoM, and Ms Lara Gerada, Health Promotion Unit. During this walk the participants will learn how to make proper use of the subways and zebra crossings, and how to skip crossing major streets to avoid the noise and delay.

Sustainable Mobility
Monday 27 October at 1200hrs (duration approx. 50 mins)
Dr Maria Attard, Director of the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development will talk about mobility and its potential impacts on the environment. The audience will be challenged to think about the sustainability of our mobility patterns for the future.

An Overview of STREETS Project
Tuesday 28 October 1200hrs (duration approx. 50 mins)
Ms Luana Chetcuti Zammit, Ms Nicolette Formosa and Ms Deborah Mifsud of the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development will talk about their work on the STREETS project, showing the applications of GIS in this work.
 
Eco design products
Friday 31 October at 1100hrs (duration approx. 50 mins)
Mrs Margaret Camilleri Fenech of the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development will be presenting ideas on perceived and planned obsolescence and eco design products. The audience will be encouraged to discuss these ideas.

Mr Raphael Mizzi of the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development and Ms Lara Gerada of the Health Promotion Unit, at the Department of Health, will be discussing the Green Travel Plan at the University of Malta and the health benefits of using alternative modes of transport.
