Study-Unit Description

CODE DSG1503

TITLE Dental Materials Sciences

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Faculty of Dental Surgery

DESCRIPTION In this study-unit, the student will be introduced to the dental materials that are utilized routinely in the fabrication of removable and fixed prosthodontics as well as orthodontics.

The different materials are classified and the properties (Physical, mechanical, chemical, biological, electrical and adhesive) of each individual material are then discussed. A special attention will be given to casting of metal and alloys. An understanding of metal structures will also lead to an insight of changes that take place during soldering, welding and combination of alloys with porcelain.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit will provide an in-depth overview of dental materials that are routinely used in the dental laboratory.

The general properties of materials used in Prosthodontics and Orthodontics will be presented. The study-unit will also discuss the applications and handling techniques of the materials.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss the different types of materials used in Dentistry with relevance to the dental laboratory.
- Discuss the material properties of materials used in Dentistry with relevance to the dental laboratory.
- Describe the material properties before and after mixing and placement.
- Anticipate any shortcomings presented by the different material types when in use.
- Describe the chemistry of the material and its interactions with the human body.
- Explain the degradation processes of the materials after placement.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Classify the different types of materials used in Dentistry with relevance to the dental laboratory.
- Correlate the material properties according to the application.
- Select a suitable material according to the particular application.
- Mix and handle the material depending on its particular use.
