CODE ORC1800

TITLE Removable Prosthodontics - Complete Dentures

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Oral Rehabilitation and Community Care

DESCRIPTION This study-unit explores the theory related to complete denture fabrication. It introduces students to the clinical and laboratory challenges of complete denture prosthodontics.

Clinical topics include: assessment of the edentulous patient and anatomy of the edentulous ridges, impression techniques, jaw registration records, tooth selection and setting up, development of occlusal schemes for complete dentures, trial dentures, provision of dentures and maintenance of complete dentures.

The student is also introduced to mandibular jaw movements and articulation. Various types of articulators are discussed together with their specialized use. The concept of setting up in relation to various types of skeletal articulations are studied in detail. The techniques of the lost wax technique in denture flasking and its alternatives will also be covered.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to provide the student with an in-depth theoretical knowledge of complete denture prosthodontics from a clinical and dental laboratory perspective, in order to appreciate and understand the challenges in providing and maintaining complete dentures.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Choose the best practice approach to communicate and collaborate with the dentist.
- Explain the sequencing of all the clinical and laboratory steps involved in fabricating and maintaining complete dentures.
- Discuss the different special trays that can be constructed for impression procedures of complete dentures.
- Discuss jaw relation record procedures for complete dentures.
- Discuss mandibular jaw movements.
- Discuss dental articulators and their role in complete denture fabrication.
- Discuss tooth selection procedures and tooth set up for complete dentures.
- Discuss different occlusal schemes for complete dentures.
- Comprehend the importance of trial dentures prior to completion of complete dentures.
- Discuss different denture flasking techniques, with emphasis on the lost wax pattern technique and its derivatives.
- Discuss the clinical and laboratory steps in the provision and maintenance of complete dentures.
- Discuss the principles of immediate dentures.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify the challenges in providing conventional and immediate complete dentures.
- Interpret correctly the laboratory prescription provided by the dentist.
- Communicate with the prescribing dentist the laboratory limitations associated with an edentulous case and suggest appropriate laboratory techniques.
- Organize the sequencing of all the laboratory steps involved in fabricating and maintaining complete dentures.
- Identify the alternative special trays that can be used in fabrication of complete dentures.
- Identify the alternative jaw relation record procedures for complete dentures.
- Identify teeth that are appropriate for the patient's needs.
- Administer different occlusal schemes for complete dentures and setting up denture teeth.
- Construct conventional and immediate dentures.
- Identify different flasking techniques and their indications.
- Discuss procedures associated with complete denture maintenance- repairs, denture relines and rebases.
