DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to the theoretical and clinical challenges of fabricating partial denture prostheses.

This study-unit explores the principles of partial denture fabrication, and how to apply them clinically.

Topics include: The predicament of being partially edentulous, assessment of the partially edentulous patient, impression techniques, jaw registration records, tooth selection and setting up, development of occlusal schemes for partially edentulous patients, trial of partial dentures, provision and maintenance of partial dentures.

In addition, the study-unit will also discuss overdentures, interim dentures, designing of cast partial dentures, components of cast partial dentures.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of Removable Prosthodontics 2 is to provide the student with an in-depth knowledge of the partially edentulous milieu, planning and providing of removable partial dentures in partially dentate patients.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• Discuss patient clinical charts and presenting complaints in clinical practice.
• Choose the best approach to communicate with the patient.
• Choose the best approach to collaborate with the dental technologist.
• Explain the sequencing of all the clinical steps involved in fabricating and maintaining removable partial dentures.
• Discuss the impact of the oral environment on the design of overdentures and partial dentures.
• Describe impression procedures for partial dentures.
• Discuss jaw relation record procedures for partial dentures.
• Describe tooth selection procedures and tooth set up for partial dentures.
• Explain the importance of various try in stages associated with provision of partial dentures.
• Discuss the provision and maintenance of partial dentures.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• Collect medical and clinical data.
• interpret correctly patient clinical charts and presenting complaints in clinical practice.
• Identify the challenges in treating partially dentate patients.
• Communicate with the patient and dental technologist the most appropriate clinical treatment.
• Organise the sequencing of all the clinical steps involved in fabricating and maintaining overdentures.
• Apply different impressions techniques used in fabrication of partial dentures.
• Apply different jaw relation record procedures for partial dentures.
• Select teeth that are appropriate for the patient's needs.
• Administer different occlusal schemes for partial dentures and setting up denture teeth.
• Organise the clinical steps of denture trials.
• Provide and maintain partial dentures.

ADDITIONAL NOTES A pass in this study-unit is required before registering for ORC4034.

Please note that a pass in all assessment components is obligatory for an overall pass mark to be awarded.

Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
