| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces the treatment options available to restore patients with single or multiple gaps in their dentition. Conventional tooth-supported and implant-supported fixed prostheses are discussed. The theoretical basis of Osseointegration is discussed and will include basic science, material science and its role in management of patients missing single or multiple teeth. Proper implant installation is demonstrated on models. The student is taken through all the necessary clinical steps involved to demonstrate competence. This includes understanding the principles of proper teeth preparation that is first demonstrated on models prior to starting clinical training. Fixed Prosthodontics 2 also provides an accurate description of the modern methods involved in registering a patient's occlusal relationship. This allows the student to understand the importance of accurate transfer of information from the mouth to the dental laboratory. Focus is given to the wide variety of materials available to the prosthodontist/dentist to deliver a durable fixed restoration to the patient while emphasizing the advantages and disadvantages in each case. Fixed Prosthodontics 2 is complete with a detailed overview of how conventional and implant supported prostheses are maintained and what measures are needed to secure their longevity. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to teach students about implant prosthodontics to help them: - Determine when conventional tooth supported or implants are indicated in a patient and to communicate clearly their advantages and disadvantages. In addition, students will be capable to include implant dentistry as part of their overall treatment plan. - Deliver clinically simple conventional bridgework and implant restorations. - Be knowledgable in contemporary implant surfaces and their role in the understanding of the osseointegration process. - Understand the workflow in conventional bridgework and implant restoration. - Communicate to the patient the importance of recall and post-treatment care when fixed prostheses are delivered. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss the theoretical and practical aspects involved in conventional bridgework and implant dentistry. - Explain the importance of successful osseointegration. - Discuss the variety of implant loading protocols and techniques used. - Clearly prescribe implants in the ideal situation after in depth consideration of the patient's oral health status, financial situation and expectations. - Discuss the role of occlusion in fixed prostheses. - Discuss the maintenance of fixed prostheses. - Explain how to make an implant installation and restoration (using plastic models). 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Provide patients with treatment plans that include conventional or implant supported prostheses. - Analyze dental imaging and identify spaces for implants. - Describe the materials used in fixed prosthodontics (e.g. metals, ceramics). - Identify the basic tools (e.g. drills, impression posts) used in implant dentistry. - demonstrate practical skills in conventional bridgework. - Execute teeth preparation to provide conventional bridgework. - Analyze the mouth for implant dentistry. i.e. prescribe the correct dental imaging technique to be able to identify 'space' within the jaw to install implants and refer when necessary. - Take impressions to fabricate restorations. - Educate patients on the maintenance and care of fixed prostheses. | ADDITIONAL NOTES | A pass in this study-unit is required before registering for ORC4130, ORC4140 and RDN4135. Please note that a pass in all assessment components is obligatory for an overall pass mark to be awarded. Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below. |
