DESCRIPTION In this study-unit, students will finalize their clinical cases in oral rehabilitation by combining skills in the disciplines of operative dentistry, removable and fixed prosthodontics and periodontics.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to provide the student with the clinical setting to plan and provide comprehensive restorative treatment to patients seeking treatment at the Faculty of Dental Surgery. By the end of this study-unit, the student is expected to complete successfully treatment of at least:

- 5 Units of Crown and Bridge Cases.
- 2 Periodontal Cases.
- 1 Cast Partial Denture Cases.
- 1 Immediate Dentures.
- 1 Overdentures.
All completed cases are to be presented in a logbook format.

In addition Students are expected to finalize study cases in the areas of:
- Fixed and/or Removable Prosthodontics, inclusive of routine restorative dentistry.
- Periodontics.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss patient clinical charts and presenting complaints in clinical practice;
- Formulate a treatment plan for patients seeking restorative treatment;
- Discuss and defend the clinical steps in providing restorative treatment to patients.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Collect medical and clinical data;
- Interpret correctly patient clinical charts and presenting complaints in clinical practice;
- Communicate with the patient the most appropriate clinical treatment;
- Organise the sequencing of all the clinical steps involved in the various restorative procedures;
- Provide treatment;
- Maintain oral health in patients treated at the teaching study-unit.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Co-requisite Study-unit: ORC4130

Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.

- The Oral Rehabilitation Case can be any patient that has received comprehensive treatment restoring oral function. The treatment may include one or more of the following: 1. Complex restorative work, 2. Removable Prosthodontics, 3. Fixed Prosthodontics, 4. Therapy of advanced periodontal disease.
- The report consists of an evidence-based long essay conducted by the student on the oral rehabilitation case. It should first include a description of the examination, diagnosis, treatment planning and brief outline of the work executed on the patient. This should be followed by another section highlighting and supporting the evidence-based treatment provided. The essay should not be more than 8,000 words.
- The report should be handed in by end of the second week of May.

*The Continuous Clinical Performance mark is an average of all the clinical work completed throughout the semester.
