| DESCRIPTION | Prior to the start of the practicum, participants given a placement at an adult education centre will attend two, three-hour sessions aimed at helping participants reflect on the educational potential of the actual sites and at enabling them to design a programme that matches the needs of the respective adult learners. There will also be three-hour tutorial sessions, midway through the placement and at the end of the practicum. Participants will spend a minimum of three hours interacting with prospective adult learners, prior to the commencement of the placement. Students will teach a maximum of eighteen hours. Excluding preparation time at home, participants are expected to clock thirty-three hours of in-class/on-site reflection and action. Study-Unit Aims: - Acquire skills in analysing the learning needs of individual learners - Acquire skills in transforming adult learners' educational needs into curricular objectives. - Acquire skills in translating curricular objectives into a pedagogical actions that specifically target identified needs - Master the skills of lesson planning and curriculum programming - Acquire skills in evaluating progress in learning Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will acquire curricular knowledge of what works with different adult cohorts and be able to understand the complexity of adult learning settings and of the learning processes that unfold within them. Ultimately, students are meant to realise that education is much more than transmitting knowledge. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Work productively with adults; - Understand specific communities of practice; - Relate what is co-investigated with learners, to the cultural backgrounds, preoccupations and aspirations of the adult learners as well as (where and when necessary) the surrounding local community. - Move from the 'occasional motive' to the 'profound motive' (Lorenzo Milani), i.e., from matters that immediately capture the learners' interest to higher level learning. - Teach and learn with migrants from various parts of the world and interrelate with them in a dialogical manner. - Evaluate processes of teaching and learning with adult learners and and fellow students. - Provide written evidence of planning, preparation and execution of teaching and learning. - Report back on progress to 'base'.
