TITLE La Sociolinguistica e la Didattica dell'Italiano

MQF LEVEL 6

DEPARTMENT Languages and Humanities Education

DESCRIPTION The study-unit will investigate the relevance of sociolinguistic elements in the teaching of Italian as a second language. The first part of the study-unit will focus on the basic theoretical concepts of sociolinguistics. The second part of the study-unit will investigate the relevance of these aspects in the Maltese context. Particular emphasis will be put on the fact that in Malta, Italian is taught in a bilingual context to students who normally have a sound knowledge of Maltese and English. Students will also be asked to participate actively during lectures by selecting specific topics which are then to be discussed – these will include teaching Italian through poems, fables, legends, riddles and similar material as well as using Italian films and books to teach Italian in local secondary schools.
