DESCRIPTION This study-unit will introduce fourth year student-teachers to the wide-ranging definitions of bilingualism and will overview several bilingual education programmes around the world. The Maltese setting will be dealt with at some length, and the pedagogical functions of code-switching will be reviewed. The second part of the study-unit is dedicated to intercultural competence: definition; theoretical background; practical activities for classroom use.

Study-unit Aims:

To introduce student-teachers to definitions of bilingual education and intercultural competence; to expose them to a range of bilingual education programmes and to the theory supporting the development of intercultural competence; to help them familiarize themselves with Maltese research on bilingualism in education; and to train them to use activities for the development of intercultural competence in the classroom.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Define bilingual education and intercultural competence;
2. Read with a critical eye about different bilingual education programmes;
3. Comprehend the importance of code-switching in the classroom;
4. Appreciate intercultural competence.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Explain the context of bilingual education in Malta;
2. Describe the pedagogical functions of code-switching as a medium of instruction;
3. Give examples of bilingual education programmes around the world;
4. Be critical toward the cultural element in teaching at primary level;
5. Carry out classroom activities that lead to intercultural competence.
