Control of Microgrids for Distributed Generation including Energy Storage

Abstract: 

A Microgrid is a cluster of distributed electrical power sources usually renewable energy sources like PV systems, wind generation systems, and high efficiency combined heat and power (CHP) systems, etc, which are connected together and then collectively connected at a point of common coupling (PCC) to the national grid or as a stand-alone system (islanded mode). A microgrid can also incorporate an energy storage solution within its architecture which helps to balance the power and energy requirements of the system.

This research focuses on DC microgrids which presently is a highly researched topic, including their configuration and management. The configuration is a very important aspect that includes the types of converters needed and energy storage solutions. The management of the various energy sources within the microgrid will be researched including control systems of the converters used with the various sources with an emphasis on energy storage and load sharing. 

 



Sensorless Control in Steer-by-Wire Application

Abstract:

Steer-by-wire is an innovative technology which aims to replace traditional hydraulic-based steering in automotive applications. The system requires the introduction of two permanent magnets motors, one for mechanical steering and one for torque feedback to the steering wheel. The proposed research project aims to adapt/develop novel control algorithms which involve sensorless control. Traditional steer-by-wire prototypes rely on two dedicated position sensors for closing feedback control loops. Sensorless control in this project will be aimed at using the voltage/current measurements from the electric motors themselves to generate position measurements without the encoder.
