Description

This area of research covers two principal topics: (1) rotor aerodynamics and (2) wind measurement and modelling.

Rotor Aerodynamics

Rotor aerodynamics simulation models implemented in existing wind turbine design codes are still unreliable in predicting loads and performance under unsteady flow conditions. Present research involves the use of high fidelity computational models together with wind tunnel measurements to obtain a better insight to the unsteady flow phenomena experienced by yawed wind turbines and floating wind turbines subjected to significant wave-induced platform motions.

Wind Measurement and Modelling

This work is conducted in close collaboration with the Institute for Sustainable Energy and focuses mainly on two important fields of study related to wind resource assessment:

  • Anemometry: despite the significant advances in remote sensing technologies, the use of cup-type anemometers is still demanded by the wind industry for collecting bankable wind data sets at candidate wind farm sites. Research is this field involves the investigation of the reliability of wind measurements from cup-type anemometers subjected to (1) aerodynamic interference from different support structure designs and (2) motion induced by masts on offshore floating structures.

  • Wind flow modelling: 3D flow modelling and analysis of the wind fields across complex terrain is conducted using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. Long-term and short-term wind measurements available at various locations across the Maltese Islands are used conjointly to validate the computational models under different ambient and site-specific conditions.
