Recent developments include an extension of the neural network dual adaptive control schemes designed by the department for trajectory control of mobile robots to more complex and generic multiple-input/multiple-output nonlinear systems. The performance of various estimation algorithms used for real-time adjustment of the neural network weights were rigorously analysed and evaluated. These include the extended and the unscented Kalman filter. The dual controller based on the latter was shown to exhibit distinct advantages in control performance at the cost of significantly increased computational effort when it comes to real-time implementation.

In addition to developing theoretical results and novel control algorithms, problems are identified and solutions are explored in order to bridge the several theory-practice gaps believed to be prevalent in this area. This is performed through implementation and testing of the developed algorithms on physical, laboratory-scale pilot plant so as to facilitate the transition of results from research to industrial applications.
