Joseph M. Camilleri

Joe was educated in a mainstream Catholic church school, he read English at the University of Malta and later trained as a teacher. Between 1977-88 he taught English in his old alma mater. In 1989 he took up a position with the University of Malta’s then Centre for Distance Learning. Joe was appointed Chairman of the then Kummissjoni Nazzjonali Persuni b’Diżabilità (National Commission Persons with Disability) (KNPD) in 1994, a position he occupied until his retirment in 2014. Over the last thirty years he has been involved in the setting up of a number of DPOs in Malta and Gozo, as well as the Disability Studies Department within the Faculty of Social Wellbeing in the University of Malta. Joe was actively involved promoting disability issues on the media, he has written various articles in journals and newspapers and formed part of several high-level committees and boards. In early infancy Joe contracted rheumatoid arthritis, a condition that has left him with life-long mobility impairments. Joe is married and the father of two adult daughters.
