Biofaction is a research and science communication company working with emerging sciences and technology. We have significant expertise in science communication, technology assessment, film and video production, as well as art and science collaboration. In our work we deal with ethical, legal and social issues in emerging sciences and technologies, such as synthetic biology, plant genetic resources or converging technology. We analyze societal dimensions and ramifications of new technologies and new-to-nature organisms, conduct biosafety risk analysis, stimulate public dialog and public engagement and interactions with art, media and industry. The projects we are working on involve numerous European partners, from academia, civil society, industry and art.

The SYNMOD game is a science communication game, aimed to teach the principles of synthetic biology and inform players about the problem of drug resistance, ways to overcome it, and novel antibiotics production.The game is based on the SYNMOD project funded by the European Science Foundation. The project proposes to apply a comprehensive synthetic biology approach to the design and production of novel lanthionine-containing antibiotics, called lantibiotics. The project targets the growing problem of multidrug resistance, caused by the excessive use of antibiotics. Following the concept of synthetic biology, in SYNMOD naturally existing peptide building blocks that comprise a lantibiotic molecule, are re-combined to assemble new lantibiotics.Based on this concept, Biofaction developed a game for mobile devices with iOS and Android operating systems, aimed to demonstrate how the active antibiotic assembly line works.The game is aimed to serve as an educational tool for a target audience of high school students and young adults, interested in synthetic biology, medicine and biology in general.

It is designed to:

  • help players memorize the names and 1-letter codes of 20 standard amino-acids;
  • provide accessible additional information on the structure, functions, interactions, and the biological role of 20 common amino acids;
  • explain the modularity of antibiotics synthesis;
  • provide a “first-hand” experience in the synthesis of biologically active molecules with real-life outcomes;
  • stimulate interest to synthetic biology and motivate players to learn more about it.

Industry Showcase 2

Game Studies is a new academic field and interdisciplinary field of learning, which focuses on games, playing and related phenomena. Its recent rise is linked with the emergence of digital games as a cultural force, but it is not restricted to any technology or medium. Recent years have meant growth for the international game research community, as research publications, books, seminars, conferences, journals and associations have been created in the field of game studies. The center for applied game studies is scientific partner of the “Future and Reality of Gaming Conference”, held on an annual basis at the Vienna City Hall.

Danube University Krems started its first master program in applied game studies in the year 2007, so the center of applied game studies can be seen as one of the first institutions teaching game studies in middle Europe. Since 2007 the scientific team works with their students on different kind of games. The most famous game is called Ludwig (www.playludwig.com/en). Ludwig is a 3D physics adventure on renewable energy for adventurers of 11 years old and up, developed by the Austrian based company ovos ltd.. Danube University was responsible for the scientific research during the development and after its release. It is currently under development for the Chinese market. Other games focus on the games for health aspect, Girls and IT,  HR development, renewable energie, mobility or the importance of being multilingual. This particular Master Program in applied game studies emphasis on forming project leaders of the future, especially in the field of developing games with a purpose.

 

At the exhibition at VS Games you will be able to play Ludwig and the prototype of the board game “Grattle”.
