Joseph Falzon received a Ph.D. degree in economics from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, U.S.A. in 1984. He taught at several American Universities including Roosevelt University in Chicago, Northwestern University and University of Cincinnati. He returned to Malta in 1988 and was appointed as the first Head of the Department of Banking and Finance, set up in 1994. He is the author of several local and foreign publications and of numerous papers on the Maltese economy. He has served as a consultant to several organizations including the Malta Tourism Authority, the Bank of Valletta, the Central Bank of Malta, the Office of Fair Competition, Enemalta, the Housing Authority and the Chamber of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (GRTU). His research interests include hedge fund strategies, portfolio management, trading futures strategies, micro finance, and economic development.
