Welcome to the Insurance Unit

The goal of the insurance unit is to attract and educate talented individuals who are committed to a professional career in insurance or financial services. The areas studied include amongst others, life and non-life insurance, pensions, actuarial science, property, construction and engineering, risk management, and health care components. The emphasis will be on careers in actuarial analysis, claims, financial planning, regulations, compliance, internal controls, risk management, portfolio management, sales, technology, and underwriting.

Our vision is to take insurance and financial services into the new millennium. The Unit aspires to bring to focus, to traditional as well as non-traditional students from a variety of backgrounds, the benefits and potential that a career in insurance-financial services has to offer. We aspire to work closely with the business community, so our students can obtain a greater understanding of the technology, communication, interpersonal skills, and sound business practices that will allow them to succeed in a rapidly growing and changing insurance industry.

We aim to prepare students for the real business world and provide them with a good balance between academia and practice. Lecturers within the department have both academic qualities as well as several years of work experience in the financial services industry.

The course prepares students to meet the growing need for employees locally and abroad specialised in various areas of financial services (eg. Risk Management, Actuaries, Underwriters, Claims Managers, Brokers, Information Systems, Regulation, Internal Audit, Compliance and Re-insurance to mention a few). However, we also prepare students for research, that will offer insights into the challenges of complex business and regulatory environments. We strive towards excellence by promoting industry knowledge and tackling real-world matters. Our vision is to translate state-of-the-art research into business tools that executives can implement to make better decisions.

Above all our educational goal is to provide quality teaching, aimed at developing quality graduates who provide tangible contributions to the organisations that employ them.
