DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides students with an introduction to the theory, tools, and terminology of equity markets from a finance point of view together with their application. In order to maximise knowledge and skills transfers’, the material covered in this study-unit focuses on principles of investments and valuation of equities.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at providing students with an introduction to world of investments with particular emphasis on equities. The study-unit also aims at giving students an introduction to the theory and tools used in order to price and trade equities.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Discuss asset-pricing and equilibrium in capital markets;
Distinguish between mutual funds and other investment vehicles;
Explain how security analysis is done and equity valuation models;
Define hedge funds;
Evaluate investment performance and to show how portfolio management is implemented in practice.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Value securities using different valuation models;
Perform security analysis;
Build portfolios;
Evaluate investment performance;
Use asset-pricing models.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Pre-requisite qualifications:
Having completed year 1 of the Bachelor in Commerce (Gozo) EU funded.
