| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit presents international trade (micro) and international finance (macro) perspectives of international economics. It is divided into three areas, international trade theories, trade policy and international macroeconomic policy. The first area presents the Ricardian, Heckscher-Ohlin models, new trade theories, the rationale and impact of the international location of production processes and firms in the global economy. The second area deals with the instruments of trade policy and the controversies surrounding trade policy with a look at the role of the World Trade Organization. The third area deals with issues of exchange rates and international monetary systems. Study-unit Aims: The aim of the study-unit is to expand the analysis of micro and macro economics to the international arena, by focusing on trade and financial relationships across countries. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify the major theories surrounding different trade relationships across the globe; - Explain the rationale for such trading relationships; - Describe the role of finance in the way trade is conducted. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply theoretical frameworks to existing trade between countries at different levels of development; - Interpret trade data and trade trends from statistics issued by international institutions; - Judge the efficacy of policies which aid or hinder the movement of goods, services, labour and capital across countries.
