DESCRIPTION Health and safety is an issue that has created much debate and concerns various different issues. Attention will be paid to occupational health and safety as well as health and safety as a concern of the industry as a whole. Issues relating to legislation and employee rights will be covered. Cultural issues will also be discussed to understand the discrepancies between legal frameworks and dangerous work practices. The issues concern the different stakeholders within the Transport and Logistics sector from Employers, to employees and end users too.

Study-unit Aims

This study-unit aims at creating an understanding of the risks and actions to be taken within this sector. We will also try to understand what needs to be done to overcome different problems that concern the health and safety of different user groups in Malta, from employees to different user groups. Students can use the Occupational Health and Safety Authority's website (http://www.ohsa.org.mt/) as a very good source of information regarding health and safety in Malta, ranging from online publications, regulations, examples of good practice, and other issues that will be discussed in class, amongst other things.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- recognise danger zones within the Logistics and Transport sector
- understand what approaches need to be taken to overcome these problems and health risks
- be aware of the potential dangers
- tackle different issues such as legal, cultural and communication issues by taking an informed approach

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify risk factors in the workplace.
- interpret and manage health and safety legislation.
- implement health and safety regulation/s.
