DESCRIPTION This study-unit will start with a brief history of transport. We will then discuss the relationship between transport and social and political organization. Demographic change; and the effect of the Industrial Revolution and urbanization on people's movement are factors and milestones that will be explored; This course will also outline the different needs for transport in contemporary culture: business, migratory and tourist movements. Furthermore, issues such as employment in the transport sector, and environmental concerns will be highlighted.

Study-unit Aims

This study unit aims to provide an understanding of the need, importance and impact of transportation and transportation systems in society. A cross-cultural approach will be adopted during this analysis.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. understand the social environment in which the transport system operates;
b. Evaluate the critical importance of the world economic situation on the transport system and on different sectors of society.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Contextualise managerial decisions and understand the effects of technological change on transport and society.
