| DESCRIPTION | The discipline of fleet management has assumed great importance in modern business. Being a critical and costly function, it cannot be overlooked and efficient control and management of one's transport fleet translates itself into substantial cost savings. This unit will present a comprehensive description of existing logistical practices, describe ways and means to apply logistical principles to achieve competitive advantage and provide a conceptual approach for integrating logistics as a core competency in enterprise strategy. Study-unit Aims - To give knowledge of effective fleet transport management practices - To enable analysis and examination of current operations - To make organisational improvements Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Examine the link of transport in the company operations and activities - Analyse the key areas of operations, roles and responsibilities - Identify and Understand key performance indicators, speed, cost, reliability, routing and scheduling - The trade-off between vehicle fill and customer requirements, drops and distances, 'own and operate or `contract out' options - Succeed in improving operations, accident awareness and cost analysis, - Be able to improve fleet performance and operational costs 2.
