DESCRIPTION This unit is to help the students understand the environment which affects logistics and transport systems. The content of this module covers the sustainability of transportation, the effect of government decisions and regulation, the recent changes in economic affairs, dependence on management information systems, organisational changes and market influences

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Understand the sustainable development planning process;
2. Define the interdependence between corporation and society;
3. Identify the factors influencing corporate and functional goals and objectives;
4. Assess the role of government policy in respect of logistics and transport;
5. Determine the effect of legislation, regulation and control measures;
6. Identify the range of stakeholders involved in transport and logistics and analyze their needs and conflicts;
7. Ethical considerations relating to the external environment; and
8. Determine the role of information systems and technology.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Determine the social and economic factors to be considered in sustainable development;
2. Understand the relationship between corporations and society;
3. Contribute to the development of organisational structures;
4. Analyse the government decision making policy;
5. Determine the effects of privatisation processes in the transport sector;
6. Communicate effectively with the different stakeholders in the industry;
7. Plan and develop the organisation's policy and practice to respond effectively to changes in the external environment surrounding the business; and
8. Appreciate the different information technology systems available to manage business activities.
