DESCRIPTION This study-unit assists the student to understand the characteristic elements of integrated logistics and the role and application of logistic principles towards supply, demand and value chain management. Logistics and the related concept of a supply chain underpin business and/or corporate strategy as far as the latter sets its company objectives in such basic activities as source/supplier, procurement/purchasing, manufacture/production, product, inventory/warehousing, distribution/transportation, retail and customer.

Study-unit Aims:

With international trade becoming more and more important for many business and corporate organisations, efficient logistics and supply chain management is essential for firms to remain competitive. Therefore the study-unit is expected:

1. To introduce the students to the concepts of managing logistics and other supply chain subsidiaries;
2. To appreciate the impact of different supply chain management components on the success and profitability of an organisation;
3. To critically appraise current practice in logistics and supply chain management.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the study-unit the student is expected to be able to:
- Identify the key components involved in supply chain and logistics management;
- Understand the importance of logistics and the supply chain in assisting other functional areas of any business organisation, such as production and marketing, especially for an organisation involved in manufacturing and distribution; and
- Understand the importance of logistics and supply chain by appreciating the critical role logistics and supply chain management practice has within day-to-day business processes.
