The Professor Donia Baldacchino Research Fund

The Professor Donia Baldacchino Research Fund

When someone makes a big impact in our life, or when someone changes the community for good, it’s fitting to honour their contributions. On Wednesday 26th September,  we honoured Professor Donia Baldacchino, whose contribution left an impact on her colleagues, her students, her alumni, her family and her friends to an extent that it changed their lives.....

We could have opted to do this tribute by unveiling a portrait or even naming a hall or a lecture theatre in her memory.  However, we opted to go beyond finding solace in some kind of memorial. We made sure that the memory of Donia Baldacchino lives on by ensuring that her contribution to academia inspires future generations.

The Faculty of Health Sciences, in collaboration with the Research, Innovation and Development Trust of the University of Malta, inaugurated the Professor Donia Baldacchino Research Fund.

On Wednesday 26th September, we awarded three scholarships to Ms Joanne Caruana, Ms Lorraine Falzon and Ms Lilian Polidano, currently reading a Master of Science degree by Research in Spirituality and Nursing, which is Donia’s very own fruition.

The award giving ceremony was held at The Jesuits’ Church of the Circumcision of Our Lord in Valletta, located adjacent The Old University Building (L-Università l-Qadima or L-Università l-Antika), also known as the Valletta Campus, the original campus of the University of Malta.

The event was addressed by the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences - Dr Roberta Sammut; the CEO of RIDT - Mr Wilfred Kenely; Professor Donna Mead OBE who was a close collaborator to Professor Donia Baldacchino; Academic Members of the Faculty of Health Sciences - Dr Josephine Attard and Ms Therese Bugeja, with the participation of violinist Dr Joseph Chetcuti; Soprano Ms Astrid Cacciatore and Organist Ms Amy Vella.

The Research, Innovation and Development Trust, the RIDT of the University of Malta, was set up to strengthen the research portfolio of the university in all areas of study, by engaging with the community and seek Financial support.
