| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit starts off with an overview of ethical theory and moral principles relevant to health care and then goes on to discuss a number of health cares issues and dilemmas related to antenatal, neonatal, pediatric, psychiatric, end of life and geriatric care. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims to help students understand how various ethical theories can be used in health care decision making. By presenting a number of ethical dilemmas in various health care settings, it also aims to engage students' critical thinking skills, showing how the ethical decision making framework presented in the first part of the study-unit could be useful in resolving ethical dilemmas. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - explain the main ethical theories and moral principles; - understand how these can be usefully applied in health care; - recognise the various issues and dilemmas which present themselves in various health care settings; and - understand how to apply and ethical decision making framework to arrive at a considered opinion and resolution of such dilemmas. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - engage critically in debates on current and topical ethical dilemmas; - address ethical issues in a professional way; - reflect on their own moral dilemmas in their own field of practice; - demonstrate an ability to identify ethical issues in a particular scenario; and - demonstrate an ability to think and write critically.
