| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces the student to the theory of midwifery practice. It also introduces the student to factors which promote and hinder the development of midwifery as a profession nationally and internationally. It also critically examines the future of midwifery. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is for students to gain an insight into the historical perspectives and the evolvement of the midwifery profession over the centuries. Students will be introduced to the competencies they will have to attain in order to practice as a midwife by the end of their four year programme. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Understand the holistic perspective of Midwifery theory and practice; - Define the midwife in terms both of her relationship with women and the formal definitions of the WHO and EU. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify the factors that influenced the development of midwifery as a profession; - Identify the competencies needed to be able to be registered, licensed and work as a midwife; - Identify the role of the midwife, including opportunities and constraints; - Promote Midwifery as a profession.
