DESCRIPTION 1. Communication skills.
- Communication in the oncology setting. A detailed review of communication as part of the interpersonal skills and holistic approach to patient/client needs;
- Communication skills. The process of communication, environment, emotional states;
Models of communication. Communication models and perspectives;
- Communication in practice. The radiographer-patient relationship; the use and role of communication skills to support vulnerable people;
- Professional issues. Self-analysis and reflective practice; documentation; time management; legal and ethical issues; codes of conduct.

2. Biological therapies and indicators.
- Principles of use and clinical applications of biologically based therapies and indicators in specific disease management to include immunotherapy and tumour markers.

3. Health promotion.
- Health promotion initiatives and public engagement. Epidemiology and aetiology links with health promotion and the role of the health care professional.

4. Screening for Cancer.
- Practical and ethical considerations in the screening for cancers with particular regard to breast cancer, cervical cancer and colo-rectal cancer.

5. On-treatment review and prescribing.
- The specialist role of the radiographer.

Study-unit Aims:

- Provide students with an opportunity to develop their professional practice in relation to an holistic approach to cancer care;
- Enable students to reflect on the factors that should be considered in the management of cancer using biological agents;
- Enable students to discuss the role of health promotion and cancer screening.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate the acquisition of the core skills of communication and apply a range of appropriate skills within that process relevant to the specific needs of adult and paediatric patients with cancer;
- Demonstrate a holistic approach to the treatment of cancer (adults and children) in analysing and evaluating available treatment methods.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe the principles of biological therapies and their application in the management of the disease;
- Discuss the role of the health care professional in broader issues of health promotion and cancer screening;
- Discuss the role of the radiographer in on-treatment review clinics. Identify common side effects of radiotherapy and advise on their treatment and discuss the role of the radiographer in prescribing, supplying and administering medicines under group protocols;
- Evaluate applications such that they are able to make informed professional judgments in relation to each part of the radiotherapy process in which they are involved.
