It-Tajra Childcare Centre started operating in April 1996 in order to make it easier for parents and guardians of pre-school age children to study or work on Campus and to serve as a centre for research in Child Development and Early Childhood Education. This centre is located at the Msida Campus. Today, the general public may also avail itself of this service.

The Child Care Services of the University of Malta endeavour to provide a safe and healthy environment in which children grow holistically. The staff, in collaboration with parents and other stakeholders, is committed to ensure a creative environment conducive to learning through play and to instill in children an inquisitive attitude and love for learning.

The two centres cater for the pre-school education of children. Tajra centre takes children from the age of 18 months up to 4 years, while at Ilwien children can join at the age of 12 months and stay till they are 3 years old. The pre-school classroom set-up, where structured play is the predominant factor, reflects the belief that children learn best in a stimulating yet ordered environment. Hence, the two schools are an open plan and divided into well-defined areas including role play, messy area, construction area, music and dance, amongst others. The centres also include provision for nappy changing and a rest area for children attending for more than five hours. Outdoor activities held in the facilities outdoor play areas provide the necessary balance complementing the activities held indoors.

The centres’ main goals, in line with the National Curriculum (2102) and the Learning Outcomes Framework for early years, are the following:

  1. Children who develop a strong sense of identity
  2. Children who have a positive self-image
  3. Children are socially adept
  4. Children who are effective communicators
  5. Children who nurture positive attitudes towards learning and become engaged and confident learners

Winter: 1 October to 15 June
Morning session: 07:30 – 13:30
Afternoon session: 13:30 – 17:30

Summer: 16 June to 30 September
Morning session: 07:30 – 13:30 

The Centres do not operate on:

  • weekends and on national and public holidays falling during the week
  • 2 January
  • Easter Monday
  • 16 August 
  • 26 December 

Parents or Guardians wishing to enrol their children are required to compile the official registration form which is available online here. The registration form is available all year round and Parents or Guardians are able to submit the form anytime during the year.

Once the form, including the 35-euro, one-time registration fee, is submitted, the child is registered on the centre’s waiting list.

Enrolment to the childcare depends on the waiting list and vacancies in the particular age group. This waiting list is managed by the date of registration. When a child is due to start attending the centre, parents are contacted around one and a half months in advance.

  1. All resident academics and administrative, technical and industrial members of staff appointed through Council, working full-time at the University of Malta (UM) or any other entity recognised by UM.
  2. Students reading for a full-time degree or diploma at UM or any other entity recognised by UM.
  3. All resident academics and administrative, technical and industrial members of staff appointed through Council, working part-time (20 hours per week and over) at UM or any other entity recognised by UM.
  4. All academic, administrative, technical and industrial members of staff appointed through Council, working less than 20 hours per week at UM or any other entity recognised by UM. Students reading for a part-time (morning) degree or diploma at UM or any other entity recognised by UM.
  5. Other members of staff not appointed through Council, working at UM or any other entity recognised by UM.
  6. The general public.

It-Tajra Childcare Centre offers afternoon drop-off sessions between 13:30 and 17:00. School-aged children will have the opportunity to do their homework with the help of a homework teacher as well as participate in various clubs and free play activities.

Registration includes a one-time registration fee of 35 euro. An application for the Drop-In session becomes active when the following forms are submitted to the Manager or Centre Co-Ordinator.

  • A copy of the child’s Birth Certificate
  • Pick up Authorization Form, Medical History Forms, and Image using consent Form
