Welcome to the University of Malta’s

Childcare Centres – Ilwien and It-Tajra

Mission Statement

The Child Care Services of the University of Malta endeavour to provide a safe and healthy environment in which children grow holistically. The staff, in collaboration with parents and other stakeholders, is committed to ensure a creative environment conducive to learning through play and to instill in children an inquisitive attitude and love for learning.

Our centres

The two centres cater for the pre-school education of children aged 1.5 years to 3 years 11 months by 22nd September. The pre-school classroom set-up, where structured play is the predominant factor, reflects the belief that children learn best in a stimulating yet ordered environment. Hence, the two schools are an open plan and divided into well-defined areas including home corner, messy area, block centre, audio-visual and IT corners amongst others. The centres also include provision for nappy changing and a rest area for children attending for more than five hours. Outdoor activities held in the facilities outdoor play areas provide the necessary balance complementing the activities held indoors.

The centres’ main goals are outline below:

The Social and Emotional (Affective) Development of the child;

The formation of good health habits;

The Physical (Gross and Fine Motor) Development of the child;

Development of the child’s imaginative and creative capabilities;

Motivating the child to desire and seek information and understanding; and
