Post of Library Assistant

The University Library is recruiting suitable candidates for the post of Library Assistant to help in the running of its various departments under the respective heads of section. The appointee will be responsible to the Director of Library Services or his deputies for the proper carrying out of the duties assigned to him/her. 

Eligibility

Successful candidates will be placed in the appropriate Scale as follows:

  • Scale 14 – at least two (2) passes at Advanced Level, or one (1) Advanced Level and three (3) at Intermediate Level and four (4) passes at Grade 5 or better in the Secondary Education Certificate and a qualification in computing
  • Scale 13 – a Diploma in Library and Information Science
  • Scale 12 – in possession a recognised University degree (MQF Level 6)

In the absence of a qualification in librarianship the selected candidates will be required to follow the University’s study programme for the Diploma in Library & Information Studies.


Salary Details 

The annual salary for each entry scale, according to qualifications and experience, is as follows:

  • Scale 14 – €17,832 rising by annual increments of €317 up to a maximum of €19,734 
  • Scale 13 – €19,087 rising by annual increments of €335 up to a maximum of €21,097
  • Scale 12 – €20,386 rising by annual increments of €354 up to a maximum of €22,510

Library Assistants in Scale 14 will move to Scale 13 on completion of two (2) years of service in the grade and to Scale 12 after a further two (2) years. All progressions are subject to satisfactory performance reports.

Further Information

The appointee may be assigned duties in any Library Department or activity at the Main Library on campus or in any of the branch libraries.

The duties pertaining to this post include: 

  • General assistance in the running of the various Library departments under the supervision of the respective head of section;
  • First cataloguing and ‘finishing’ of processed works, bibliographic checking, circulation work, shelving and collections ‘management; 
  • Assistance in general floor supervision;
  • Carry related duties as may be required by the University.
  • The appointee is expected to work:
  • On a full-time basis, and will not be allowed to engage in any other gainful employment without the permission of the Council;
  • At such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University Authorities.

  • The evaluation of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);
  • Short Listing of candidates;
  • An invitation to short-listed candidates to a Selection Board interview.

The selection process will follow the document “Guidelines for Members of Selection Boards in the Recruitment of Administrative, Technical and Industrial Staff”

In accordance with the guidelines, members of the Selection Board will establish the following selection criteria for the selection process:

  • Relevant academic qualifications
  • Relevant work experience
  • Aptitude and suitability
  • Performance in interview

The appointment will be subject to a probationary period of six months, and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
