Applications are invited for the Post of Social Worker within the Health and Wellness Centre of the University of Malta. The Social worker will be responsible to the Chairperson of the Centre

Eligibility

Candidates are expected to be in possession of:

  • A degree in Social Work
  • A warrant and a minimum of five (5) years of social work practice.

Candidates must be proficient in the use of Maltese and English Languages.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Be competent in the use of IT
  • Work independently and take initiative

Salary

The annual salary for 2023 is €28,040 rising annual increments of €531 up to a maximum of €31,226. On completion of five years’ service in the grade, the appointee will, on satisfactory performance, be entitled to move on to the next salary band with annual increments of €596 up to a maximum of €33,518.

The Health and Wellness Centre at the Msida Campus offers services aimed at enhancing the wellness of University (UM) staff and students.

Professional support, to help UM staff and students take on the challenges and grasp the opportunities that may arise as a result of everyday life situations, is readily available at the Centre.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be expected to:

  • Work with individual students and staff to support them in meeting with their personal, social, educational and life goals;
  • Manage a caseload and maintain comprehensive, accurate, and up-to-date confidential records;
  • Become familiar with the structures and systems of the University especially those that are dedicated to supporting students and staff;
  • Work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary colleagues from other support services of the University in the best interests of service users; 
  • Use evidenced-informed practice of their work; 
  • Be knowledgeable about the range of local service provision where service users could be referred to;
  • Be culturally competent and have had experience of working with service users from different cultural backgrounds;
  • Participate in supervision sessions on a regular basis;
  • Maintain high standards of professional practice in line with the Code of Ethics for Social Work;
  • Regularly evaluate own service provision;
  • Participate in programme of Continuous Professional Development to ensure that they update and develop their knowledge, skills and abilities;
  • Use own means of transport for their work.


The appointee is expected to work:

  • On a full-time basis, and will not be allowed to engage in any other gainful employment without the permission of the Council; and
  • At such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities and the Head of the Counselling Services. On a weekly roster basis: - The Counselling Services Unit at the University of Malta provides a service on Monday to Friday between the hours of 08.00 and 20:00 during Winter hours (1st September to 15th June).  To meet this need winter working hours are between 07.30am to 16.45pm, except that on one of the days the applicant will be expected to work from 5.00pm till 8.00pm on a roster basis excluding recess weeks. The extra three hours will be considered as flexi hours and will be availed of on days agreed with the Head of Unit.  During Summer hours counselling services are provided between the hours of 07.30 to 1.30pm only.

  • An invitation to short-listed candidates to a Selection Board interview.


The Selection Process 

The selection process will follow the document “Guidelines for Members of Selection Boards in the Recruitment of Administrative, Technical and Industrial Staff”

In accordance with the guidelines, members of the Selection Board will establish the following selection criteria for the selection process:

  • Relevant academic qualifications
  • Relevant work experience
  • Aptitude and suitability
  • Performance in interview

The appointment will be subject to a probationary period of one year and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
