Orientation Course Programme for New Administrative, Technical and Industrial Staff – November 2011


The Office for Human Resources Management & Development organised an Orientation course programme in November 2011. This course spanned over three days from Monday 7th November 2011 to Wednesday 9th November 2011.     

The programme was specially designed for newly recruited members of staff, that work in the administrative, technical and industrial fields and who were recently employed at the University of Malta. These employees currently work in several branches in the University of Malta, primarily in the administration, faculties, centres and institutes. The programme’s main goal was to give the participants a basic overview and awareness of the organisational context of the University of Malta and the services which are provided to its stakeholders.    

On the first day of the programme, a brief introductory session was delivered Ms Amanda Ciantar. Subsequently, the Pro-Rector Professor Mary Anne Lauri gave a brief introduction of the University of Malta and its administrative background.  This session was followed by the Director of Communications and Alumni Relations, Ms Patricia Camilleri who related a detailed history of the origin of University of Malta and provided information on the events organised by the Communications and Alumni Relations Office. Mr Mario Cassar illustrated the administrative set-up of the Faculties, Centres and Institutes via a power-point presentation, and explained the administrative work involved in overseeing students’ progression within the University. Mr Mark Debono, the Director of Finance gave a talk on the structure of the Finance Office and Dr Charmaine Cristiano Grech gave a brief talk on the role of the Legal Office. In the final session, Ms Anna Callus gave a presentation on the functions of the International & EU Office.

The second day started off with a campus tour of the University grounds, which was conducted by Ms Daphne Kelleher. Consequently, Ms Marlene Bezzina delivered a talk regarding file keeping within the Registry Office. The Director of the Office for Human Resources Management & Development gave a brief introduction of the role of Human Resources in an organisation and a short talk about the services provided by this office. Another talk ensued regarding the Academic Programmes Quality & Resources Unit and its function, delivered by Mr Colin Borg. Ms Angela Xuereb organised an interactive presentation, conducted at the IT Services Labs regarding the day-to-day use of the University’s website. Subsequently, Ms Joanna Felice delivered a presentation of the online library services provided to both students and staff, followed by a tour of the Library.
On the final day, Mr Luigi Pellegrini gave a detailed account of the responsibility of the Scheduling Office. Rev Michael Bugeja gave a brief tour of the Chaplaincy and gave details about the activities organised by the Chaplaincy. Mr Oliver Mallia guided the participants to the University Sports Complex and the National Pool and delivered a short talk about the services offered by the University Sports Complex. This was followed by an introduction to the Counselling Services by Ms Lorleen Farrugia. Mr James Cilia conducted an IT Services Session at the IT Services Labs, where he demonstrated the online and technical services provided by IT Services. Ing Elisa Vella gave a brief talk on the Office of the Registrar and the function of SIMS. This was followed by an introduction to the Staff Welfare Fund by Mr Benny Borg Bonello. The final two sessions were delivered by Mr Noel Caruana, who presented detailed power-point presentations on The Staff Collective Agreement and the Student Advisory Services and answered all the queries presented by the participants.    

Throughout the whole programme, the participants were encouraged to actively participate and interact with the speakers for further discussions and clarifications. Furthermore, a session was set aside for the participants to provide their general feedback regarding the course by means of an evaluation form and were given a small test in the form of a quiz. This feedback session was scheduled as the final session. The participants who attended at least eight hours of the programme were presented with a certificate of attendance.
