Orientation Course Programme for New Support Staff – April 2011

The Office for Human Resources Management & Development organised an Orientation course programme in April 2011. This course spanned over three days from Monday 4th April 2011 to Wednesday 6th April 2011.     

The programme was designed for new staff members who work in the administrative, technical and industrial field and who were recently employed at the University of Malta. These employees work in several sectors of the University of Malta, mainly in the administration, faculties, centres and institutes. The programme’s main aim was to give the participants a basic overview and awareness of the organisational context within the University of Malta.    

On the first day of the programme, a brief introductory ice-breaking session was given by Ms Karen Cacciattolo and Ms Amanda Ciantar. Subsequently, Professor Mary Anne Lauri, the Pro-Rector who is responsible for students and institutional affairs, gave a brief introduction of the University of Malta. This was followed by a campus tour of the University grounds conducted by Ms Daphne Kelleher. Mr Mario Cassar illustrated the administrative set-up of the Faculties, Centres and Institutes via a power-point presentation, and explained the administrative work involved in overseeing students’ progression within the University. Mr Mark Debono, the Director of Finance gave a talk on the role of the Finance Office and Dr Charmaine Cristiano Grech gave a brief talk regarding the aims of the Legal Office. Another talk ensued regarding the Academic Programmes Quality & Resources Unit, delivered by Mr Colin Borg. Finally, Ms Anna Callus gave a presentation on the role of the International & EU Office.
The second day started off with an introduction to the Counselling Services by Ms Lorleen Farrugia Afterwards, the Director of Communications and Alumni Relations, Ms Patricia Camilleri related a brief history of the University of Malta and provided information on the function of the Communications and Alumni Relations Office. Consequently, Ms Marlene Bezzina delivered a talk regarding the Registry Office. Ms Angela Xuereb organised an interactive presentation, conducted at the IT Services Labs regarding the use of the University’s website.     Lastly, the Director of the Office for Human Resources Management & Development delivered a brief introduction on the role of Human Resources in an organisation and a short talk about the services provided by this Office.    

On the final day, Mr Oliver Mallia delivered a short talk about the services offered by the University Sports Complex. This was followed by Mr Albert Debono who delivered a presentation on the Student Advisory Services. Ing Elisa Vella gave a brief talk on the Office of the Registrar and the function of eSIMS.    Mr James Cilia conducted an IT Services Session at the IT Services Labs, where he demonstrated the online and technical services provided by IT Services. Later, Ms Josianne Vella delivered a presentation of the online services provided by the Library, followed by a tour of the Library. Ms Edith Boffa then gave details about the role of the Chaplaincy and the activities which it organises.  An introduction to the Staff Welfare Fund ensued by Mr Benny Borg Bonello and Mr Tonio Agius.

On Monday 25th April an extra session was organised for Mr Noel Caruana, who delivered a detailed power-point presentation on the Staff Collective Agreement and answered all the queries presented by the participants.   

Throughout the whole programme, the participants were encouraged to actively participate and interact with the speakers for further discussions and clarifications. Furthermore, a session was set aside for the participants to provide their general feedback regarding the course by means of an evaluation form. This feedback session was scheduled as the final session, in which a quiz took place. The participants who attended at least eight hours of the programme were presented with a certificate of attendance.
