The Office for Human Resources Management & Development organised an Orientation programme spread over three days between Wednesday 23rd and Friday 25th September 2009.  The programme was aimed at newly recruited support staff who was recently employed at the University of Malta, working in administration, faculties, centres and institutes.  It gave the participants a basic understanding of the organisational structure and the several services offered by the University of Malta.  During the programme, participants were provided with guidelines and tips on how to tackle their day-to-day tasks more effectively.  

On the first day of the programme, Ms Patricia Camilleri, Director of Communications and Alumni Relations delivered a power-point presentation on the history of the University of Malta.  The participants were then addressed by Mr Mario Cassar who gave a power-point presentation regarding the set-up of the Faculties, Centres and Institutes. Mr Mark Debono, delivered a talk on the role of the Finance office followed by a presentation by Ms Lorleen Farrugia, regarding the role of the Counselling Services. Afterwards, Dr Oriella De Giovanni gave a brief talk on the Legal Office. Ms Jacqueline Fenech, Director for Human Resources Management & Development, gave a brief talk on the role of the same office. Ms Daphne Pia Kelleher finished off the first day with a presentation on the use of the University’s website at one of the IT Services Laboratories.

On the second day, Ms Daphne Kelleher held a Campus Tour. This tour helped the participants to orientate themselves with the locations of the faculties, institutes, centres and other sections of the University.  Ms Edith Boffa gave an overview of the services offered by the University Chaplaincy. This was followed by an introductory talk on the Registry Office held by Ms Marlene Bezzina. The Student Advisory Session was held by Mr Noel Caruana followed by the IT Services Session. The latter was delivered by Mr James Cilia in IT Services Laboratories. A presentation on the function of the Academic Programme Quality & Resources Unit was done by Mr Colin Borg.

The third day involved Ms Joanna Felice, Head of Reader Services, who introduced the services of the Library, followed by a presentation and tour - conducted by Ms Josianne Camilleri Vella. Ms Stefania Fabri, Director of the International & EU Office, gave a talk on the same office. The last session of the orientation programme was held by Mr Noel Caruana who delivered a presentation regarding the Collective Agreement.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the sessions on Registrar’s Office; Scheduling Office; Sports Complex and on Welfare fund were not held. During each session, the new recruits were encouraged to actively participate in the discussions.  They were also given the opportunity to provide their general feedback on the course by means of an evaluation form, distributed to them on the last session of the course.  Participants who attended to at least eight hours of the programme were provided with a certificate of attendance.
