Induction Course Programme for New Members of Staff 

The Office for Human Resources Management & Development organised an induction course programme spread over four days between Monday 10th and Thursday 13th November 2008.  The programme was aimed at recently recruited members of staff working in administration, faculties, centres and institutes, and it gave the participants a basic understanding of the various services of the University of Malta. The programme consisted of a combination of power-point presentations, talks, discussions, an ice-breaking session and a general knowledge quiz.

The first day of the programme consisted of an introductory ice-breaking session by Ms Karen Cacciattolo, followed by a power-point presention on the history of the University of Malta by Ms Patricia Camilleri, Director of Communications and Alumni Relations.  Ms Camilleri as well provided information on the functions of the Communications and Alumni Relations Office.   A welcoming speech followed by Dr Mary Anne Lauri, who is the Pro-Rector responsible for students and institutional affairs. A power point presentation regarding the set-up of the Faculties, Centres and Institutes was held by Mr Mario Cassar.  Mr Cassar gave an overview of the work involved from admission of students up to the graduation period. The participants were than introduced to the University’s website by Ms Angela Xuereb at an IT Services laboratory. 

The second day started off with a campus tour by Ms Angela Xuereb, followed by a presentation on the responsibilities of the Scheduling Office by Mr Luigi Pellegrini.  Another presentation was held on the Academic Programmes Quality & Resources Unit by Ms Jo-Anne Attard. On this same day, Fr Michael Bugeja introduced participants to the services offered by the University Chaplaincy.  A presentation by Ms Charlotte Attard, Finance Consultant, was then delivered, regarding the role of the Finance Office.  This day finished off with an information session by Mr Noel Caruana  on the Staff Collective Agreement and the Student Advisory Services.
On the third day participants were addressed by Ms Veronica Grech, Registrar Designate, who briefly explained the many functions of the Office of the Registrar, including the role of the Admissions & Records Office and the use of the University’s Student Information Management System (SIMS).  This was followed by a presentation on the role of the International & EU Office by the Director, Dr Omar Grech.  A visit to the University of Malta Library followed, where Mr Silvio Cortis, Deputy Head of Reader Services, introduced the services of the Library, followed by a presentation and tours conducted by Ms Mona Azzopardi and Ms Josianne Camilleri Vella. An interesting session was also held by Mr Benny Borg Bonello, assisted by Mr Tonio Agius, regarding the Staff Welfare Fund.
During the last day, Mr Oliver Mallia provided information on the University Sports Facilities, followed by a speech by Dr Chris Soler, Director of Legal Services, Dr Oriella De Giovanni and Dr Charmaine Grech regarding the role of the  Legal Services Office.  This was followed by an introduction on the Counselling Services by Ms Lorleen Farrugia. A presentation on the services offered by the IT Services (ITS) was delivered by Ms Vanessa Camilleri and the Director Mr Robert Sultana.   The several functions of the Office for Human Resources Management & Development were then presented by Ms Karen Cacciattolo.  This day finished off with a very interactive  general knowledge quiz conducted by Ms Karen Cacciattolo, assisted by Ms Kristina Micallef.

The new recruits were encouraged to actively participate in the discussions throughout all sessions.  They were also given the opportunity to provide their general feedback on the course by means of an evaluation form, distributed to them on the last session of the programme.  Participants who attended to at least eighty percent of the programme were provided with a certificate of attendance.
