Induction Course Programme for New Members of Staff 

The Office for Human Resources Management & Development organised an induction course programme spread over four days between Monday 19th and Thursday 22nd January 2009.  The programme was aimed at new members of staff working in administration, faculties, centres and institutes, and it gave the participants an  overview of the various services of the University of Malta. The programme consisted of a combination of talks, power-point presentations,  discussions, an ice-breaking session and a general knowledge quiz.

The first day of the programme consisted of an introductory ice-breaking session by Ms Karen Cacciattolo.  A welcoming speech followed by Dr Mary Anne Lauri, who is the Pro-Rector responsible for students and institutional affairs, and a power-point presention on the history of the University of Malta was then held by Ms Patricia Camilleri, Director of Communications and Alumni Relations.  Ms Camilleri also provided information on the functions of the Communications and Alumni Relations Office.    A power point presentation regarding the set-up of the Faculties, Centres and Institutes was held by Mr Mario Cassar.  Mr Cassar offered a basic understanding of the work involved from admission of students up to the graduation period. On this same day, Fr Michael Bugeja introduced participants to the services offered by the University Chaplaincy. The participants were than introduced to the University’s website by Ms Angela Xuereb at the FEMA laboratory.

The second day started off with a presentation on the responsibilities of the Scheduling Office by Mr Luigi Pellegrini.  A presentation was then held by Ms Jo-Anne Attard on the role of Academic Programmes Quality & Resources Unit.  This was followed by a visit to the University of Malta Library, where Ms Joanna Felice, Head of Reader Services, introduced the services of the Library, followed by a presentation and tours conducted by Ms Mona Azzopardi and Ms Josianne Camilleri Vella. An interesting session was then held by Mr Benny Borg Bonello, assisted by Mr Tonio Agius, regarding the Staff Welfare Fund.

On the third day participants were addressed by Ms Stefania Fabri, who introduced the tasks of the International & EU Office.  A speech by Dr Chris Soler, Director of Legal Services, Dr Oriella De Giovanni and Dr Charmaine Grech followed, regarding the role of the  Legal Services Office.  Ms Veronica Grech, the University Registrar, briefly explained the many functions of the Office of the Registrar, including the role of the Admissions & Records Office and the use of the University’s Student Information Management System (SIMS).  This was followed by an introduction on the Counselling Services by Ms Lorleen Farrugia.  An interesting presentation by Ms Charlotte Attard, Finance Consultant, was then delivered, regarding the role of the Finance Office. This day finished off with an information session by Mr Albert Debono  regarding the Student Advisory Services.

During the last day, a presentation on the services offered by the IT Services was delivered by the Director Mr Robert Sultana and Mr James Cilia.  This was followed by a talk by Mr Oliver Mallia who provided information on the University Sports Facilities.  A campus tour was then held by Ms Laura Mifsud Bonnici, followed by a brief talk on the role of the Precincts Office by Ms Maronia Schembri.  A very interactive  general knowledge quiz was conducted by Ms Karen Cacciattolo, assisted by Ms Kristina Micallef.  This day finished off with a talk by Ms Jacqueline Fenech who introduced the several functions of the Office for Human Resources Management & Development.

The new recruits were encouraged to actively participate in the discussions throughout all sessions.  They were also given the opportunity to provide their general feedback on the course by means of an evaluation form, distributed to them on the last session of the programme.  Participants who attended to at least eighty percent of the programme were provided with a certificate of attendance.

Members of staff who attended the course were: Jesmond Bonello, Daryl Borg, Jessica Borg, Lara Camilleri, Sandro Curmi, Joseph Debattista, Elaine Fenech, Lara Maria Fondacaro, Donatella Gatt, Roberta Gauci, Joseph Grech, Maria Stella Grima, Alexia Sue Schembri and Josanne Marie Spiteri.
