Press Release – Induction Course Programme March 2009

The Office for Human Resources Management and Development organised a four-day induction course programme between Monday 23rd and Thursday 26th March 2009.  The programme was aimed at newly recruited support staff who was recently employed at the University of Malta, working in administration, faculties, centres and the library.  It gave the participants a basic understanding of the organisational structure and the several services offered by the University of Malta.  During the programme, participants were provided with guidelines and tips on how to tackle their day-to-day tasks more effectively.

On the first day of the programme, Dr Mary Anne Lauri, who is the Pro-Rector responsible for students and institutional affairs, welcomed the participants and informed them about the main goal of the University of Malta, i.e. to teach and undertake research, and to provide professional people for industry and society.  The participants were then addressed by Ms Patricia Camilleri, Director of the Communications and Alumni Relations Office, who gave a brief explanation of the many functions of the same office.  Mr Mario Cassar gave a presentation with regards the set-up of the Faculties, Institute and Centres, followed by a short information session regarding the role of the International & EU Office by the Deputy Director Ms Stefania Fabri. The last session was an introduction to the University’s Website, delivered by Ms Angela Xuereb.

The second day commenced with a Campus Tour, which was held by Ms Daphne Kelleher. This tour helped the participants to orientate themselves with the locations of the faculties, institutes, centres and other sections of the University. A presentation was then held by Ms Jo-Anne Attard, Assistant Registrar, on the role of Academic Programmes Quality & Resources Unit, better known as APQRU. A visit to the University of Malta Library followed, where Mr Silvio Cortis, Deputy Head of Reader Services, introduced the services of the Library, followed by a presentation and tours conducted by Ms Mona Azzopardi and Ms Josianne Camilleri Vella. An interesting session was also held by Mr Benny Borg Bonello, regarding the Staff Welfare Fund.

A short speech on the Registry Office’s responsibilities was delivered by Ms Marlene Bezzina on the third day. This was followed by a short talk on the Legal Office by Dr Oriella De Giovanni and Dr Charmaine Grech.  Mr Benny Borg Bonello, Deputy Registrar briefly explained the many functions of the Office of the Registrar, including the role of the Admissions & Records Office and the use of the University’s Student Information Management System (SIMS). Throughout the third day, there were also presentations on the Counselling Services, the Student Advisory Services (SAS) and the Staff Collective Agreement. These were held respectively by Ms Lorleen Farrugia, Mr Albert Debono and Mr Noel Caruana. The day finished off with a short speech by Ms Anita Aloisio, Director of Finance with regards the roles of the Finance Office.

Mr Oliver Mallia, Sports Manager informed the participants about the services that one can benefit from the University Sports Facilities. This was followed by Mr Luigi Pellegrini who gave an explanation on the responsibility of the Scheduling Office. The several functions of the Office for Human Resources Management & Development were presented by the Director, Ms Jacqueline Fenech. An introduction to the services offered by IT Services was given by Mr James Cilia, IT Services Deputy Director and Head of User Services. The last day of the programme finished off by a Quiz session conducted by Kristina Micallef.

During each session, the new recruits were encouraged to actively participate in the discussion.  They were also given the opportunity to provide their general feedback on the course by means of an evaluation form, which was distributed to them at the end of the course programme.  Participants who attended the programme were provided with a Certificate of Attendance.
