Writing Skills Modules in English 

The Office for Human Resources Management & Development, in collaboration with the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, organised a series of six, 2-hour training sessions in writing skills in English for administrative purposes.  This training programme was offered to clerks working in administration, faculties, institutes and centres.  The sessions were held for a total of 12 participants between 13th November and 16th December 2008.

The tutors made participants aware of the importance of writing professional documents effectively.  They also provided participants with guidance on how to format communication documents that suit the needs of the receiver, how to make appropriate choices concerning style and tone, and how to avoid a range of common writing errors.  The modules covered during the training programme included:  Grammar and Cohesion; Style and Tone; Letter Writing; Emails; Notices and Faxes; Memos and Report Writing.  
Participants were encouraged to work on sample material individually and in groups.   They were also given the opportunity to provide their general feedback on the seminar by means of evaluation forms, distributed to them at the end of each session.  Participants who attended to at least 80% of the programme were provided with a certificate of attendance.
