The Director

Prof Maria Attard has been appointed Director of the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development. A geographer by training with specialisations in the fields of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Land Transport, Prof Attard joined the University of Malta in 1997 as a research assistant within the newly set up GIS Lab. She took over its administration in 2000 when appointed Assistant Lecturer and started her doctoral work at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis and the Geography Department at University College London (UCL) researching the application of GIS for decision support in transport policy.

Prof Attard completed her Ph.D. and became a Lecturer in Geography within the Mediterranean Institute while maintaining the coordinating role of the GIS Lab. She worked on a number of national and international projects related to transport strategy and sustainable mobility and participated in a number of projects focusing on sustainable development and sustainable mobility. She was also involved in the HERODOT Thematic Network for Geography in Higher Education whereby benchmark statements for Geographic Information Systems were developed, as well as being awarded an International Educator Award in GIS by ESRI in 2008.

As a lecturer Prof Attard is involved with a number of Departments and Faculties within the University, making her teaching and research also very interdisciplinary.
