Faculty of ICT first 'Lounge-Around'

Soon, at this point in the year, the University of Malta brings to a close its admissions period for new students wishing to enroll in a range of undergraduate courses offered by the various faculties. The Faculty of Information and Communication Technology appreciates the fact that potential students are faced with several career defining decisions, especially in today’s local ICT educational scenario. This can translate to puzzlement and stress for both potential students and their parents. In view of this, the Faculty of ICT set up a first of its kind informal three hour long Q&A event for individuals interested in joining the faculty’s student body. The Q&A session targeted student queries about the study programmes offered, students’ expectations, the quality outlook held by the faculty, and career options that graduates can look forward to. Members of staff from both the academic and the administrative staff of the faculty were at hand to answer any student queries and provide advice. This informal event was coined a “lounge-around” session and presented attendees with a relaxed laid-back environment, complete with refreshments and background music, during which faculty staff, including the Heads of the various Departments and the Dean, talked to various participants. Issues broached by those attending the event ranged from course selection to work opportunities in the local and global ICT job market and the skills and attitude needed for success.

In their various interactions with those present for the event, faculty staff endeavored to explain the concepts behind the ongoing commitment of the faculty to deliver degree programme content that is of the highest established recognised international quality and accepted by all prestigious universities in the world for postgraduate studies. It was interesting to note, that the event also saw the participation of various industry employees, interested in furthering their ICT skills through the range of postgraduate courses that the faculty offers.

Presently, the Faculty of ICT offers a total of nine undergraduate degree courses and nine postgraduate degree courses at Master and Doctoral levels. All the faculty’s degree programmes allow students specialisation in various areas of studies including computer science, and intelligent computer systems, communication and computer engineering and micro and nanoelectronics, and computer information systems. The successful ‘lounge-around’ event drew a large number of attendees from many schools, professional sectors and walks of life. The faculty would like to thank all the academic staff who took part, the organising committee which worked incessantly to guarantee the best possible outcome, other administrative and support staff who helped during the event, ICTSA for mediating with KSU, KSU for their help in securing the premises, sponsors J. Borg Bonaci & Sons for the catering, and Chemimart Group for the raffle gifts and for the samples to distribute. Last, but not least the faculty thanks all the attendees for showing interest in the event.
