LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Computer Information Systems

DESCRIPTION The study-unit introduces students to the field of computer networking, data transmission principles, OSI layers, routing, Internet protocols, and types of Internet networks including Social networks and Mobile networks such as Instagram.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim is to introduce students to the concepts of major network types and develop practical skills needed to comprehend and manage facilities provided by modern networks. The concepts involved will be explained.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- describe different types of network topologies;
- distinguish data transmission property types;
- explain what the OSI 7 layer is;
- describe transport layer issues like packets, ports and error detection;
- explain how network routing operates;
- analyse the principles of Interprocess communication;
- explain practical types of network services such as DNS, ports and sockets;
- describe the early community networks such as CSNET and FIDONET;
- explain the influence of server loads on Social networks such as Facebook and Mobile networks such as Instagram, the security and issues involved in maintaining such networks.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- choose the correct network topology to a particular networking scenario;
- apply the OSI 7 layer model to different problems;
- apply practical types of network services such as DNS, ports and sockets;
- apply practical network and data transmission solutions to different scenarios;
- choose the correct routing solution and update routing tables;
- apply Interprocess Communication solutions;
- use social networks and mobile networks from a practical perspective.
