The Institute of Earth Systems' Award for Academic Excellence is presented annually to students who obtain outstanding results during the first two years of the B.Sc. (Hons) in Earth Systems course. This undergraduate degree course is an interdisciplinary programme with a focus on the science of planetary systems and the management of natural resources, and over 150 students have graduated with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Earth Systems since the programme's inception in 2011.

In order to qualify for the Award for Academic Excellence, which is sponsored by the HSBC (Malta) Foundation, students must consistently obtain the highest grades, including a minimum of 80 ECTS at grade A or better and a further 20 ECTS at grade B or better.

The award for 2019 was presented to Ms Mandy Balzan and Ms Michaela Borg by Professor Joseph M. Cacciottolo, Pro-Rector for Academic Affairs, and the Institute’s Director, Professor Louis F. Cassar, during a ceremony held on 1 July 2019.

The presentation of certificates formed part of the 2019 Earth Systems Graduate Launchpad, which showcased recent research projects undertaken by students reading for the Institute’s B. Sc. (Hons) in Earth Systems. Ten of the highest-graded dissertations from the last two years were selected for oral presentation during the event, which also included a poster session and an exhibition of students' photos from a field trip to Tenerife earlier in the year.

Since its inception in 2014, the Award for Academic Excellence has been awarded to the following students:

2019:  Ms Mandy Balzan and Ms Michaela Borg

2016:  Ms Marta Falzon

2015:  Mr Paul Galea

2014:  Mr Martin Austad, Ms Cecilia Camilleri, and Mr Luca Pisani
